Before you buy

Fire ratings only mean something when they are certified. Paper chars at about 175 degrees and digital media fails far lower, so the rating states both the time and what it protects: a 60P rating protects paper for 60 minutes and a data or DIS rating protects disks and drives. Look for a test certificate to EN 15659 or NT Fire 017 with a named test house. Anything sold as fire resistant without a certificate is a steel cabinet with insulation in the doors and we do not list it as fire rated. Cash ratings on safes are an insurance figure, not a construction standard. A safe rated for five thousand pounds cash is usually rated for ten times that in valuables, and your insurer decides what they will accept, so check with them before you buy rather than after a claim. Safes over 300 kg do not need bolting down for most ratings; lighter ones do and we supply the fixings. Installation matters: a safe must be bolted down to the manufacturer's pattern where the rating requires it, and your insurer may ask for proof of the fixing. Personal data has to be held securely under UK data protection law, and a lockable cabinet is the usual control for paper records. It works with a retention schedule and secure destruction at the end of it. A locked cabinet with no retention schedule behind it is a filing problem rather than a compliance one.
