Filing cabinets are made in two common sizes, foolscap and A4. Buying the wrong one is one of the most common mistakes, so this page explains the difference.
The difference
Foolscap suspension files are longer than A4 files, and a foolscap file will not fit inside an A4 cabinet. If you already have foolscap files, you need a foolscap cabinet. If your paperwork is all A4, an A4 cabinet is usually the better fit and often takes up less room.
How to measure a file you already have
Lay a suspension file flat and measure from the top of the metal runner to the bottom of the file. A4 suspension files are generally around 240mm to 260mm. Foolscap suspension files are longer, generally around 365mm. If you are not sure, measure a few files from different drawers, since older files in a mixed office are sometimes a different size to newer ones.
Lever arch files
Lever arch files are usually stored upright on open shelving rather than in suspension files, so the foolscap or A4 question mostly does not apply to them. What matters for lever arch storage is shelf depth. A4 lever arch files generally need a shelf depth of around 320mm or more so they do not overhang.
Still not sure
If you are not sure which size you need, or you have a mix of both, ask us before you order. Tell us what you are currently storing and we will help you choose the right cabinet.
